I'm not sure if it's safe or not. I remember one time I requested the serial number from a seller and he said he wouldn't give it out for safety reasons. But i thought the serial number would hold the parts of the machine and the warranty information. I have a potential buyer on my t61p and he requested the serial number, is it safe?
Also what is the MTM? Thank you in advance.

Depends why the prospective buyer wants it - usually it's to determine the manufacture date of the machine. If you give them the majority of the number but "x" out the last two or three digits, then they can date the machine but can't register for warranty or customer service or whatever.
Why are you selling? Isn't this the machine you've been tweaking?! -

MTM is the 7-digit model number of your machine -
When I bought my used T61p, I also request the seller to provide the S/N. The reason being I need to check the warranty status and original configuation. So I think you would better provide this info. to seal the deal.

giving out a serial number to a prospective buyer is safe. both the service and warranty entitlement departments run through a set of checks to help mitigate falsified service claims or warranty changes.
if you're ever uncomfortable giving your MTM/SN info out then you can take screenshots of both the parts lookup and warranty lookup page results and edit out your MT and SN info.
MT = machine type
MTM = machine type / model
SN = serial number
MTM/SN = all of the above
selling my t61p, safe to give out serial number?
