I can get a W550s second hand for around $1000 cad. Do you think it's a good deal? Worth it nowadays to aim for an 8th gen cpu?

Use case: research, writing, .net developement, 1 or 2 VMs.

No. The W550s is very underpowered compared to todays models. Its the first of the "Ultrabook Workstations" and that shows.

    Get a newer model instead.

The new 8th Gen models are the only ones that represent a real performance upgrade compared with your T430. A ThinkPads P52s is immensely faster compared with the ThinkPad W550s.

I'd get the T580 instead of the P52s if not needing the quadro gpu
