You guys have SSD, do you turn off/limit size of pagefile.sys for virtual memory? i have 8GB of physical memory in x201, 7.8 usable. when i restrict the virtual memory, now it goes to 6.87gb usable, i think due to the reserved hardware space.
So my question is: should I let system manage my pagefile? it seems to be really big (7GB last time before I restrict it 2gb max) and it can wear down our ssd?

Generally the pagefile is selected automatically to be the same size as physical memory which yours approaches. However so far, I see no sign of paging at all. If this is true, yes, you can turn off paging.

By the way, not everyone here is a guy and it's residual sexism to think we are.

umm sorry but guys, for me, in US, just means everyone. but sorry if you think i meant any way other than everyone

i read that windows uses 1.5 times of the physical ram. and i think it's quite crazy if you already have a lot :) my page file was around 7GB before i adjusted the size...

I just disable the the page file. I never use up more than 3gb of memory. This is with multiple tab open on Firefox and heavy multitasking.

If you need more storage space then by means go ahead and disable the pagefile. Personally I left it alone even though I never go pass like 3gb of memory like k2001 stated.

Of course Microsoft recommends you leave pagefile on the ssd according to this article.

Use a fixed-size pagefile [i.e., set the size range to be 2GB-2GB for minimum/maximum size]. I do this for all Windows OS drives, whether SSD or spinner.

i disabled hibernation also. now i let windows manage my pagefile again. just b/c i run up to 100% memory of 4gb before i upgraded to 8gb... just want to make sure :) though i set size of pagefile to 500mb before this and it ran fine... i think in general, we dont need it when we have lots of physical memory already . i'm just afriad tweaks and stuff.
i wonder if our ssd is dead b/c of too much write, and it came with the computer, will it be in the warranty? :D

Pagefile and hibernation disabled here too. Windows 7 x64 Professional is about an 8GB footprint this way. Works great.

If you are using a 32 bit system, you will never exceed about this amount of memory.

thanks! i found out that if I enable max memory at boot options, the memory reserved for hardware increased. so i just uncheck that option.
I have 64 bit - and I do use up to 4GB of RAM before so I upgraded more RAM for my x201 :) matlab and stata use quite a lot of memory for me :)
thanks for sharing the experience :)

I'd keep the pagefile, but cap it at a gig or two.

Personally, I like having *some* swap around. I don't want my first warning of some rampant process to be an OOM kill...
