Until this yesterday, my father's lappy still run fine without problem. But suddenly this noon, a horizontal line appears at one/tenth across the screen, 1px in height.
That line is not completely lit like a stuck pixel but something like a thinner version of the whole screen and somewhat lighter.
It appears on BIOS boot screen, too so I doubt it is because of the LCD but maybe because of the data cable.
    Any suggestion?

How old is it? If this is happening and it's less than a year old you should really back up your hard disk, send it back and get a new one free of charge. Don't open it up to have a look as this would invalidate it.

It's pretty old, and the warranty is long gone. Anyone have this problem before?

I have heard of it on larger LCDs. It sounds like a line of bright dots. You might try techniques for fixing the bright dots. I don't remember what they were but they're around here somewhere. You could also try to order a new LCD. A problem with the connection is unlikely. I would guess that it's a monitor defect.
