    is this legit?

or would it depend on the stick itself?

you can do it, but the T520 is capable of supporting 1333 mhz ram, and most T400 ram are clocked at 1066 mhz, so you are in effect slowing down the laptop by using the T400 ram in the T520 system.

I would note that the Sandy Bridge on-die memory controller gives a big boost in performance compared to previously. The ,memory bandwidth approximately doubled, even for older RAM.

The top entry in my table here is probably a good indicator of the performance you will get.

You won't notice any performance losses by using your T400's RAM, although technically the speeds are lower than the maximum that the T520 will support. So, if it's between that and buying new RAM, I'd just use the old sticks.

actually maybe this isn't such a good idea since the sticks may be damaged. I was in a bike accident and it (t400) onlys turns on for a few seconds... the HDD took some damage for sure but who knows what else like the RAM; i was considering using the battery too but not sure

battery on the T400 won't work in the T520.

If the RAM is physically damaged then the computer wouldn't boot at all.
