it only shuts the screen off when i do start>>sleep

plus, pressing the shut off button (hardware) does nothing (even though i went to control panel to make it sleep)

well i asked because when i first got mine, i had the same problem and it was diagnosed as a faulty mobo. strange that youve had yours for a year and it just broke.

call up lenovo and let them know.

    Damn insomniacs.

Some of the reasons that a thinkpad won't go to sleep is if the hard drive is currently involved in one of the following procedures:

    1. Making a restore point
    2. Finishing an uninstall of a program or a windows update install
    3. Undergoing a scheduled disk defrag

If you haven't done so already, next time you try putting it to sleep take note of the hard drive light and see whether it's going nuts or not.

Although I'm not totally sure, a scheduled virus scan might also get in the way.

Some other random things which can prevent sleep include:

    -Windows explorer crash
-ATI CCC crash (if you're on discrete graphics when you try to enter sleep mode)
-Having certain USB device plugged in with 'Always on USB' turned on.
