so it was working with the original driver that shipped with the laptop....when i did an automatic update through thinkvantage it updated the driver and now it can no longer find the reader (both at windows startup and through fingerprint software). Any idea what i need to do? Should I just reinstall VISTA?? How do I make VISTA recovery disks?

I was specifically told by Lenovo that the driver on their website is bad, and to use the one that came with your computer that is in the SWTOOLS folder.
-
wow hard hard is it for Lenovo to update the driver on their website?
That sucks hope you get it fixed soon. -
There is a glitch in Lenovo system update software, it downloads Fingerprint reader update and it installs it without uninstalling older version nor does it upgrade older version.
Your problem is you have two instances of fingerprint reader installed. Go to control panel > add remove programs and uninstall one of them and it should work. There is nothing wrong with the fingerprint driver on lenovo, I am using it -
noticed that 2 were installed and uninstalled the one that it installed last night (the update)...still not fixed...very frustrating!

think i might just have to create the recovery disks and reinstall VISTA...unless anyone has any other suggestions?
-
I avoid Lenovo's "automatic updates". They tend not to got right/to screw things ups.
I am VERY surprised at the lack of quality control on the updates, give the quality of the hardware. -
duckwing89, did you try uninstalling fingerprint reader completely and deleting any fingerprints associated with it, reboot and reinstall?
-
I was having trouble uninstalling both for some reason...it said to make sure I had to rights to uninstall it....but I'll give it another try. Has anyone had any other troubles with any other updates from Lenovo?
-
If you are using Vista, then you need to login as administrator to uninstall it without errors.

I think the problem may have something to do with Lenovo's Client Security Solutions in ThinkVantage. Do you guys have the Enhanced Security enabled for this (I have it enabled currently)? Is it ok to turn that off?

I recently purchased a Lenovo T400 and it has been working great. However, I have the same problem as you, when the Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update ran, it hosed my AuthenTec Finger Print Driver. The message I received was "FingerPrint System Not available."
I am running Vista Business, to resolve this, I opened "Programs and Features," uninstalled what seemed to be two versions of the fingerprint software and reboot. Then, I downloaded h ttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70598 (I couldn't post the url due to a forum admin issue. Instead, I put a space after the first h. Concatenate that string to get the url), ran the setup, and rebooted again. I am good to go.
Just to be clear, the issue here is the driver problem with AuthenTec and the hardware in the laptop. It actually has nothing to do with Windows Driver architecture DDK (Vista or XP). You should not need to go grabbing your windows reinstall disks or blow your OS away. Anyways, if you were to do that, if you lose you c:\swtools folder, that may make things really difficult to rebuild your machine since a lot of the preloaded software and drivers are in that location.
Good luck. -
resolved...thanks for all the help guys. This is my first fingerprint reader....how do you use it to log into password protected sites on IE?
-
Sorry, can't help you on that question. I use Avant Browser which stores all my username and passwords for me. I only use IE when running Microsoft Update.
