Hi all, i just got my replacement t400 from lenovo, but i just noticed one thing, that harddrive is so loud when data is accessed... it is a fujitsu harddrive.. this clicking sound is loud enough to hear in a classroom. i was wondering if anyone had any experience with this kind of harddrive. i dont think i can return just cause the harddrive is loud..... and i dont want to wait 1 month for it to come back again....

I got a new t400 the other day with an 80GB 5400rpm fujitsu drive. I can hear a slight access 'tap' but I wouldn't call it a click.

I did get tricked into thinking the disk was dying though. It seems that the default IE noise in vista sounds an awful lot like a dying hard drive click. I felt a bit lame being fooled by that, but it's much better than a dying hard drive.

really? well it sound more like sand grinding and i am not sure, its only "loud" when i am in quiet rooms, or classroom.... i asked a friend if it sounds like dying harddrive, he reply that it should be ok.... not sure. cause i had a t400 with a different hhd and it didnt sound as loud... maybe its just this company...

some harddrives just seem to be louder than others. i've noticed that my harddrive will occasionally click, but it's fairly quiet. You probably don't need to worry too much about it failing, but if you are worried, get an external harddrive to back your stuff up to (which would be smart to do anyway).

Or, you can get a new harddrive from newegg or wherever. You can get a really large and fast drive for cheaper than you'd get them from lenovo

In the bios somewhere there's a hard disk diagnostic mode. You might consider running that (backing up anything you can't lose first, of course). I ran it last night (I'm not sure how reliable a test it is), but if something is wrong I like finding it sooner rather than later.

My plan all along was to swap in a big 7200rpm drive. I settled on a WD scorpio 7200rpm thanks to posts from this forum as well as the reviews on newegg.

I got a couple of loud clicking sounds, like the read head slapping on the limits of travel, when booting up and restarting. other than that, the regular access hdd sounds are quiet. I guess it's the read head zero'ing.
