I noticed this is a new option for this laptop. Did anybody here actually receive one with this panel? If so how are colors/viewing angles on it?
One of my biggest problems with thinkpads (which prevented me from buying one) is absolutely terrible panels...Just curious if this one is any better...
-
I doubt the panel is any better since nothing has changed except the backlight. But hey if I'm wrong, I'll be glad
-
I have ordered one so I guess I will find out eventually. But, I am hoping ofr decent contrast whether color quality is any better or not. We will see.
Gary -
please post your impressions and the panel's model number when you receive it.
What are the usual suppliers/models of panels used on t400 for both LCD and CCFL models? -
Comment on viewing angles, please, especially vertical, and whether there is this milky glaze over it. I'm really hoping that it's better!
-
I too am quite interested in your opinion of the screen.
-
Aloha:
If not mistaken, screen res varies from the formerly available WXGA+ B/L LED. This info may be found on Lenovo site, or elsewhere on forums. The aforementioned panel is 1440x900

Strange thing happening. I order T400 with High nit screen on 3/12/09 and I got a shipment confirmation today saying it has shipped on 3/20/09.
Although I have poor vision, I will do my best to describe screen when I receive it and if possible have my wife take some pics if I can figure out how to upload them in a porper way. Might need some help on that part. Anyone hearing about all the shipment delays for LED screens and seeing this notice is puzzling but good news if it holds up. Tracking info awaiting tomorrow I guess.
Gary -
Unless soemthing unforeseen happens, tracking says my T400 with high nit screen should be here Thursday. Might take a couple of days for me to post pics but in the meantime, could anyone give me some ides of what kinds of pics you want to see that might help you in understanding more about this screen and thanks. For example, do you want full brightness and half brightness indoors and under what room conditions and so on. Don't know if I can comply with all but it will give me some type of ideas of what pics I can try to post when time allows.

-
Yes, I am aware of resolution. That is best for my eye sight. And, I did not really know if all LED's were affected or not by backorder.
Gary -
Now my tracking info on T400 shows Natural Disaster exception in Hong Kong as of today. What could that mean?

wonder if this has something to do with fedex plane crash in japan and all routes being screwed up there.

Here are a a few pics not that good I am afraid from my camera but anyway, here they are for high nit screen at max brightness inside.

looks pretty vibrant for a thinkpad. sweet.
-
how would you say it compares to the screen on your other laptop?
color and contrast wise. -
My eyesight is very poor, almost blind so just from an early read from that different perspective, the Sony FW does not appear nearly as bright as the T400 high nit, to be expected. For me, the high nit is easy on my weak eyes with the Matte screen. Contrast appears a little better to me just subjective for now than my Sony FW. My wife eagerly or maybe not so eagerly awaiting this Sony laptop. Although I wish viewing angles were even better I love the screen, form factor, expected great battery life and wonderful build qulatiy so that I can use for travel indoor and outdoor. Anyway, wish I could be more accurate for you. I adjusted Gamma for each color to 95 and set color saturation to 118 from default 100. Also, set DPI to 107 (111%) to match 1280x800 resolution, fine for my eyes.
Gary -
Here is another pic showing a little more color range. Camera overly saturates colors but screen is vibrant. Hope it helps.

Give me a few days because rained here today and I will see about tomorrow. Also, I would like to activate recovery partition to go babk to factory settings, not using recovery DVDs but what is on the HDD recovery partiton. I do not know the key to hit when booting to do this. Doeas anyone know?
Gary -
Found out the answer by pushing Thinkvantage button on bootup and all worked splendidly.
Gary -
Here you go guys at full brightness screen and maybe a 70% brightness shot from outside today. Hope it helps you some about T400 high nit screen. Now, when I type on my Sony keyboard I long to get my T400 up and running as my daily machine. In a few days, that will be hopefully.

When can we expect OLED displays? I hope Lenovo starts using them by the end of the year.
-
Are they even thinking of starting production of OLED this year... I doubt we will see OLED technology for at least another year. Correct me if I am wrong but all the stuff that I have see been released have been prototypes and small screens.

Just wanted to let you guys know that we have one of the updated T400's in house and a review in the pipeline. It has the spiffy 678 nit panel and a few other cool bits that were updated from our past T400 review model.
-
@Kevin,
I am enjoying my T400 high nit a lot and am just about up and running normally as my primary machine. Your previous review was excellent and I look forward to the updated review with high nit screen. Thanks for the good work.

No problem. You will also probably be happy to know that Lenovo seems to have worked up a solution to the keyboard flex issue.
EDIT: Attached an Everest screenshot of the display. I think it will be hard knowing the specifics about the panel unless someone tears it out of a T400 to read the sticker on the back.Attached Files:

Another Samsung then. I'm curious how this will compare to the much hated LED-backlit display in the T400...

Nothing overly blue and I actually love it. Give it a bump in resolution and it would be perfect.
-
Did you adjust the color control in Catalyst control center and if so, what did you find that made the screen appear better and thanks.

Thanks much.

I am surprised samsung has such bad reputation for their panels. The one I have on my Asus G1S looks great, one of the better laptop displays i've seen in recent years. -
Don't have good enough vision to comment on those things you ask but I am sure Kevin can. But, contrast for my eye sight is wonder and colors are close according to my sight on my panel. Adjusted my colors a little in contol center by setting gamma for all colors to 95 and knocking green brightness down by 10 and red and blue brightness down by 5.

Thanks for posting those pictures of your T400 outside in daylight big help huntnyc! Is the T400 still going strong? Did your order it on line from Lenovo?
With all the research (am still looking) I've done looking for a High-nit screen this more then likely the only one out there for under $2,000+/-! Am stumped as to why more companies don’t manufactor outdoor readable screen! Doesn't anyone want to be outside working when it's a nice day???
If anyone knows of other laptops with high-nits screens please let me let know. The hardest part is being unable to find these (nits) numbers and 95% of the companies agents/works/sales don't know them either! -
Yes, T400 high nit still going strong. On AC, I run at 80% brithgness and have adjusted down the brightness of colors as someone here suggested, although for T500 LED, it seems to work well for this panel also.

Anyway, hope you can find something you like.

I just ordered the T400 with the high nit screen. In short, I'm amazed how bright the screen is at it's highest setting. Makes it usable outside versus my T61.
Contrast at the mid to lower settings looks much better than my T61 when used indoors. Viewing angles seem similar though I wouldn't notice if it was bad. -
I've had my t400 high nit about 3 or 4 weeks and i love it ,, it has great outdoor viewing !!!!! which is what i wanted even though im not always outside but when i need to be, i've now got what it takes with this screen..
As for angles i think its pretty good although tilting it towards you does wash it out some but tilting it back viewing is very good.. Hope this helps.. -
hey huntnyc, can you please tell me the part number of your high-nit display?
You can find it out here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/s...=/partslookup/partsLookup.vm&sitestyle=lenovo -
Can you remind me of how to get th epart number you want? Thanks.
Gary -
Resurrecting this thread because I failed to fulfill looking up the part and FRU number sfor my high nit display because I was having trouble understanding how to do it but here is what I found and my apologies for not doing it before.
Part No. 42T0622
FRU No. 42T0623
Still a great screen on a laptop and running fine for over a year now.
Gary -
You missed the 6 month rule, but I doubt anyone would care. I'm glad it's still working great for you.
The screen on my T410 is really bright, I usually only keep it at 50-60% brightness in my room (which gets almost no sunlight
).
