I am having a hard time color correcting the built-in webcam

    XP SP3

I wonder if anyone knows whether there will be a set of better drivers released.

The darn thing won't even respond to the settings as I change them

I just mine, and I too noticed the colors are wrong.
It was very yellow and washed out.

This was just using it without any other software, however (clicking on the camera in Explorer).

skype picture is identical, and so is roxio

    it's the drivers, it seems.

I wonder if anyone is working on this. It is a FAAR cry from apple's webcam

    Thank you for that.
I removed the cover but found nothing to remove under it.
Activated the webcam with the cover off, same picture.

I recently migrated from XP to Vista, and it seems to me the Vista driver is better, but only slightly.
And both are a far cry from any Logitech I've used

I also have this problem, T400 integrated graphics, webcam doesn't seem to have any auto whitebalance. The picture is very yellow. This is not related to anything behind the trapezoid camera sticker as suggested by the link above. When I peel off the trapezoid sticker, there is nothing on the camera lens. 99% sure this is a driver problem - hope there's a fix soon!

Has anyone used a built-in webcam that is actually any good? I haven't seen one. Apple was mentioned as having good webcams in this thread but I heartily disagree. They suck as bad as any other built-in webcam I've used or seen.

I've purchased a Logitech Pro 9000 and Logitech Pro for Notebooks (same camera, different casing) and it delivers an astounding picture, especially with Skype HQ video. Fiddling around with a built-in camera isn't worth the convenience and portability for me if the image quality sucks rocks.

I haven't been here in a little while, so I don't know if the following has already been posted on here, but I seem to have found a way to correct the yellow picture problem. I found this trick on the lenovo.com forums: take your hand and cup it over the top part of the frame by the webcam so that you shield the camera from the light source. If you get your hand in the right place for 1-2 seconds, the camera corrects the color balance and the yellow goes away. I've only tried this a couple times so far, but the color seems to be corrected until you close the webcam again.

Okay, I was just experimenting with this technique again while writing this and it seems like if you just put your hand over the webcam so it is completely shielded and the picture is black (hold it there for a few seconds) it does the same color correction. I don't really know what is going on but the difference in picture quality is like night and day, so experiment with this if your picture is yellow!

Solution for only Windows 7 RC1?

I used to have the 'yellow picture' problem in Windows XP and Vista and cupping my hand over the webcam didn't seem to help. I think I found a solution, but I'm using Windows 7's default drivers instead of Lenovo's right now. My image usually starts out as yellow if I'm using incandescent or fluorescent lighting, but natural daylight works fine.

For me, in Windows 7 bringing any large solid white object (I use a blank sheet of letter paper) will have the camera fix itself. Alternatively, blocking all light to the camera and revealing only the white sheet of paper works also.

Can anyone confirm if this works on another OS? For academic curiosity?

    Thanks

    K

If it's only a Windows 7 RC thing, it might be possible to 'borrow' the driver for use in Vista.

    Thanks
