From reading here many people are disappointed with the displays on their t410s, so unfortunate and it's a deal breaker for me.

Reading reviews people seem to like the Edge 13 display. Makes no sense to me when it's a cheaper notebook.

Can anyone confirm or deny the Edge 13 has a better/easier to read display than the t410s?

I do not know, but I think people might like the Edge 13 screen for the price, where as when people buy a more expensive T410s and find a similar screen are disappointed. Remember that their is a screen resolution difference as well.
If I am not mistaken Edge 13 is 1366X768, while the T410s on a slightly larger screen has a 1400X900, more pixels per inch.

If you want a high quality screen in a 12, 13 or 14" machine, you might as well look elsewhere. Lenovo doesn't have a ThinkPad that meets that bar.

The screens on the Edge 13, T400, T410, T400s, X201s, X201 tablet, and X301 I have owned or looked at extensively were fair to good. None of them were stellar.

The machines I have owned or used extensively I would rate much higher include the T60p, T61p, W510 and W700. The W700 being the top of the list.

Lenovo is asking too much money for the T410s in my opinion. Hell, the X301 even at $1200 is too much IMHO.

Currently LCD quality is not thinkpad's strong suit.... i was watching a movie on my X200 with the LED backlighting... it only had limited viewing angle and the black doesn't come out that good. It was fairly good for personal movie watching, but if you have more than 2 people watching the same LCD, then it is fairly hard to get the viewing angle of the better non-TN LCD.

    X200t should solve this issue.

But as a business laptop then it is just fine.

Could you recommend a high quality ultra portable that has an excellent screen as close to 3lbs as possible?

A screen I like is the 13" MacBook Pro, it's not a high resolution screen but man is it clear. I don't mind the glossy, for me better than the anti glare coating.

If you like the screen on the 13" MBP, I would go for it. The Sony Z is nice but really expensive and the build quality is rumored to be below the ThinkPads and the Apple MBP.

Every machine on the market has a tradeoff. There is no perfect machine. Pick your poison.

These forums do a ton of good, providing information and know how that would be difficult to find elsewhere, but that's one of the problems with forums like this. A person who would otherwise be happy with their purchase, come here and find someone unhappy with their machine/LCD. They now think there's something wrong with their machine when they were satisfied with it before. This place is so small, you can't really derive any trends from it at all. Plus the people here tend to be enthusiast and are more like to bemoan any flaw, perceived or otherwise. The fact remains almost all notebooks these days use crappy TN displays. There's a few that have a higher contrast ratio, which is nice, but most aren't significantly better or worse than the next one for the most part.

I was watching a full HD a few months ago with some lights in the background. Without the light you can't watch scenes that are intensely dark, or glommed. For example: Sherlock Holmes, or Harry Potter. LOL

yes i am aware of this problem... hence i don't watch much movies on the laptop if i want the full effects and sound.

This is reserved for the IPS LCD or normal high quality LCD TV with full surround sound speakers.
