I am wondering if there is a backup/recovery image if I ever wanted to load factory settings?

Same here,I will take it out of box and boot via USB.. If you install paragon 2013 on the machine you have now - tools - recovery media: you can create a USB to run the program outside of windows. I would suggest testing it just to make sure it launches. You only need a small USB drive ( I used a 128 MB drive)

There should be an option in Thinkvantage tools to create factory recovery disks. I had no problems doing this on my T410s but my W510 never let me create the disks (as I recall it gave some message about files missing).

Alternatively, you can do a clean install. Use ABR (activation backup and restore, google it and download) to backup your Windows licence. Also copy the drivers directory (sorry, I don't have a Thinkpad with me today, I think they're in SWTOOLS) to a USB stick and, if you don't already have one, burn a Windows install disk (I believe there are download links in these forums somewhere). Swap the HDD with your SSD and install Windows, selecting the correct edition for your computer. Don't enter the Windows key at the prompt, just click continue and use ABR to restore the key after the install is completed. Install the wifi or ethernet driver from the USB stick, depending on how you're connecting to the internet, download and install Thinkvantage System Update and use that to install your drivers. You can also install your drivers from the USB stick instead, but the ones you get from System Update will be newer.

The Windows 8 options are different to the Windows 7 options. I have Win8 and copied my recovery partition to a USB flash drive. That's my path back to factory settings and also how I reinstalled the factory image on a new SSD. I created it through the Win8 Recovery tools.
