Which of these two machines would get a higher 3dmark06 score, t510 or 11 inch macbook air?

(Neither is really meant for heavy video work, but I like playing light duty games at lunch break, and cuda excites me.)

    Thanks!

I believe the MacBook Air with its nvidia 320m card would outclass the Nvidia 3100m if that's what's being compared here (assuming you're not referring to the integrated graphics version of the t510). Now, if you make a comparison based on overall performance that includes processor it's a different story.

On the Engadget review the 11-inch MBA was reported to stutter on playing HD Youtube videos and to lag on scrolling on graphic-heavy websites. I'm sure T510 would be the better choice if you surf web regulary and play light games.

According to Notebookcheck, the 320M gets 5% higher 3Dmark 06 than the NVS3100M.

Because 3DMark06 is so CPU-dependent, the T510 should have a higher score than the MBA regardless of the difference in GPU performance (which is pretty minimal).

And all you have to do is run Windows on a compatibility layer, with poor power management drivers cutting down the macbook's battery... for 5%.

If you want some mac games, steam just came out with mac support. It performs a little worse than on windows, but it's pretty new and improvements are being made.

can't be because of the hardware, we are long past youtube stuttering on modern hardware..esp when every gpu now has h.264 accel.

I believe that's due to the Flash plug-in used in the browser. I may be wrong here, but HD Youtube is largely being decoded in CPU if Flash plugin version is lower than 10.1 or something. The processor is the weakest link here.

    Macbook Air scores higher:

    3254 (T510): NVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

4185 (Macbook Air): Apple MacBook Air 2010 Review: Performance, Benchmarks and Gaming

I believe this is about the same you can get with the new integrated graphics that comes with the Sandy Bridge chipset. See X220 NBR Review: Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Performance and Benchmarks

Thinkpad graphic cards are mostly oriented for business applications (sadly :) ). I'd kill for a W5X0 series with something along the lines of Radeon 6970 mobility or GeForce GT555M. :)

Otherwise, in this (4k 3DMark06 marks) range, I'd rather take Sandy Bridge and its IGP (for battery life).
