I am doing a clean install of XP pro onto my new T60 without touching the SERVICEV001 patition, by following instructions here:

    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-66020

I wiped out the XP home partition, created a new one on the same space and install XP pro on it. However, the new partition is assigned letter D.

I redid it, and now the new partition is letter E!

How do get the new partition to be C, and the service partion to be D?

I think maybe the simplest thing to do would be to change the drive letter of the service partition to F if you would like it to be under E. You can do this is the disk manager in computer management. I'm guessing since the service partition already exists when you make the XP partition in the setup, it assigns it a lower letter. Having it be the E drive effects nothing.

    actually, I was stupid.

Instead of just choosing "C: (Preload)", I first deleted the partition, then create a new partition to which I installed the XP Pro.

for future reference, just choose "C: (preload)" and a screen will come up to ask you to format that partition. (Since it is already partitioned for NTFS, there's no need to delete/create like I originally did)
