    Hi
I need a laptop with an ips sceen but I don't mind for the hardware specs.
I have a powerful desktop at home and I need a laptop with a good screen to show my web work to clients out of the office.

After researching a lot and excluding newst laptops with ips screens coz they are too expensive I found news about these old ibm.

have all the thinkpad t60p and t42/3p ips screens? what's the highest resolution I can achieve? I'ld like to have a 1900x1200 which I think is wuxga right?
I'ld probably work at lower res, but if I have to show a website at its full res I need to get 1920.

are they all 15,4"? do you know where I can get aftermarket ips screens for these laptops?

thank you guys, this seems an endless quest.

    Michel

The highest resolution you'll get on these is 15" 1600x1200 if you want an IPS panel. None of the widescreen ThinkPads of that era offered IPS panels.

No, they are 15". They were also available as 14", but these panels were not IPS.

    Here's the breakdown:

    a) 15" SXGA+ (1400x1050) available on T42, T43,T60 and T60p.

    b) 15" UXGA (1600x1200) available on R50p, T42p, T43p and T60p

Do bear in mind that T42, T43 and T60 were offered with 15" XGA (1024x768) as well, but these panels were not IPS.

There are no aftermarket IPS panels available for any of these machines.

The HP EliteBooks 8540w and 8740w with the DreamColor LCD are 1920x1200 IPS screens.

I ndeed they are, but my impression was that the OP was looking at older ThinkPads due to their far lower price range amongst other things...

thank you, that clears things up a lot. it's exactly what I was trying to know.
    Very detailed infos. thanks ajkula66

@Zaz, yes I know them, probably awesome laptops but as Ajkula figured they are way out of my budget right now. I considered the Dell's precision too, but same obstacle. Plus it seems they aren't shipping any IPS screen for the moment due to some troubles they had.

One more question: I was reading on this forum that someone "overclocked" their screen or better the vga. Apparently they were able to achieve an higher resolution than offered on nvidia cards by customizing the setinngs and multiplying by 1.5x and 2.0x etc.
You know if this would be possible on these Ibm's machines?

Not by any stretch of imagination.

All of these machine run on fairly vintage ATi GPUs (V5250 in late-model T60p units being the most powerful one) and the panels are conventional 6-bit IPS or AFFS ones. Resolution is not adjustable "upwards", so to say...

The "ultimate" resolution could be achieved with a QXGA (2048x1536) LCD that was an option for R50p models, but these screens are very rare and would cost you more than any of these machines per se...NOS ones are well over $300 on eBay, and ship from China, so if you receive a less-than-pristine example, you'd be out $50 or so for shipping it back. These panels are also somewhat dim (150 nits as opposed to 200 nits on standard UXGA ones) when compared with the rest of IPS screens used in ThinkPads of that era.

On a different note: what are your hardware requirements, and what are you looking to spend? I've got a basement full of various examples of IPS-equipped ThinkPads...

oh I see, well too bad but not a deal breaker.

As to my requirements: since these laptops are old I aim for the best specs possible, but it's not that important. to make a comparison: I have an hp pavillion 5008ea with a sempron 3000+ (1.8ghz), 1.5gb of ram, 80gb HD, and an ATI xpress 200m as vga. it works fine and it would be perfect for my purpose if it wasn't for the bad monitor quality.
I admit I'm looking for a better cpu and a better vga since these ones are having troubles keeping up with the latest browsers but mostly with the latest versions of flashplayer.
Working on a browser is all I need as a web developer.
As a matter of fact those specs can even run the adobe suite cs3 that for quick retouchings on-the-go are fine.
So I guess I'm looking for something similar or maybe better, but not quadcores :D
the intel's dualcores would probably be a great improvement.

Something I was wondering now and that I actually would need is to run win 7. When I show a website I need to show that works on different browsers and operative systems. so I'ld probably have many partitions running win xp, win7, linux.
it's not a dealbreaker either, for the final proofs I can invite clients at my studio showing this on my desktop.

Are you offering to sell me one? in that case I have to tell you that I'm in Italy. Customs fee may kill me :D eventhough there are some workarounds when the shippings are amongst privates and not stores.

For a Core Duo, or Core 2 Duo you're limited to T60/p.

Any of these machines will run W7 without breaking a sweat.

If you tell me what you need, and are willing to spend, I'm certain I can find something in my ever-changing stock for you...;)

Shipping to Italy is not a problem.
