Hey guys i just formattted my t61 to clean it up and all and now i have a very slow harddrive. Was hoping some one else has run into this problem.

HD Tune reports an average of 0.4 mb/sec transfer rate....which is ridiculous....it takes me forever to do anything....even typing this thing is bad. System specs are

    t7100 core 2 duo 1.8 GHZ
    2 G ram
    160 GB hard drive Hitachi
    HD Tune: HITACHI HTS541616J9S Benchmark

    Transfer Rate Minimum : 0.0 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 2.5 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 0.4 MB/sec
    Access Time : 272.6 ms
    Burst Rate : 7.7 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 7.3%

Hard drive temp 42 degrees Celsius

    IDE controller is

Intel (R) ICH8M-E/M sata ahci Controller

Is there some driver i missed or something?? why is it so slow?

alright guys so i figured it out....basically my fan is not operating well so i had to order a new one from lenovo. $45 shipped overnight. Kinda sucks but i'm hoping this will fix the issue. Basically the part number straight from lenovo are

    42w2462 toshiba fan
    44c557 ricoa fan
    18003887080 parts

    These are for a t61 7662-CTO

I figured out the problem by running HD Tune and as the temperature would rise, my fan would kick in and would make a really wierd noise and my read/write would drop drastically. If the computer had just come back from sleep i was able to do stuff really easily however when i had it running for awhile that is when the hard drive would slow down drastically. I also installed speed fan which utilizes many temp sensors on the computer which all say they are hot. Hope this helps other in my situation.

Oh and i am going to use this to hopefully help me replace the fan.

    Hope this helps.

If fitting the entire fan/heatsink assembly make sure you have some pharmacy grade isopropyl alcohol to clean off the thermal paste on the processor (use sparingly) and also some new thermal paste/compound. A ceramic one would probably be best as there's less chance of shorting stuff out if you put too much on.

Did you checked your CPU temperature to be sure the CPU is throtthled down when it reaches a temperature up to 90C?

Thanks for the tips t30power and mrjohn.....i replaced the heatsink/fan and cleaned off all the thermal grease and the fan/heatsink already had some on it so i just screwed the new fan and heatsink in. Everything is running much much faster now. The temps are also much lower. I guess something was just wrong with the original fan. Hopefully this one doesn't go out after a year and a half but if it does i guess i know how to replace it. I used the parts manual off of the lenovo website to help me change the fan. Took me like 1 hour. Fairly easy and definitely needed. Thanks for everyone's help in getting this figured out. THe fan was $45 via lenovo shipped over night. 3 dollars less for ground so i thought it worth it. anyway....if anyone is having slow read/writes then this could be the resolution....of course a good indication is a gradual decrease in performance over time such as its fast and then 10 minutes later its super slow. Hope this article helps others out. Joel
