every now and then when I click on a link or go to open a folder on my hdd, the computer just hangs with the mouse showing the loading screen but I am not able to do anything except manual shutdown. Is there any solution to this?

I would like to know a solution to this as well. This happens whenever I am playing Warcraft 3. My computer just randomly freezes and I can't do anything but shutdown manually.
I had a previous post about this and the speculation was that my HD was bad. This can't be the case though because this only happens to me while playing warcraft.
Any suggestions to fix this would help. -
Lots of different reasons for freezes, so you should check the obvious things first. Blow out your vents, make sure your system is up-to-date, uninstall any recently installed programs (and hardware if possible), scan for malware, ensure your RAM is seated properly. If none of those work, check your Event Viewer to see if anything listed might give a hint as to the problem.
Be patient. Trouble-shooting freezes is a PITA. Good luck. -
If you have vista and are getting the freezes only while running on battery I have a few suggestions for you.
1) If you have turbo memory going into your programs through the start menu and disable both readyboost and readydrive.
2) If you have the thinkvantage access connections installed, delete it. You can always get it back if that doesn't solve the problem. You don't really need it anyway as vista has it's own tool for this.
3) Try disabling or deleting the thinkvantage active protection system. Again, you can always reinstall this if it doesn't solve the problem.
I had the same problems with vista business and I deleted the access connections and disable turbo memory. I no longer get freezes.
