The HP business notebooks look nice but few are out yet and they're more expensive.

You might check out the Sony business laptop line, the BX:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834117522

If you can stand integrated graphics then you have a lot of options, but they narrow a lot if you want dedicated. The Dell 830 isn't THAT bad from what I've heard. Then again I've never owned a dell.

There's also the Sony Vaio FZ series that you can pick up at about 1500 which has dedicated graphics.

There is the ASUS C90s which is suppose to be released mid june but it's sort of an awkward desktop replacement.

There is the Compal IFL90 *shudder* which I know nothing about (besides that it's butt ugly)

I haven't looked into it but I think gateway has some santa rosa notebooks out. Obviously because Santa Rosa is so new the uptake is still coming along. If I weren't going to get a thinkpad I'd rate the other options as:

    1. HP business notebooks
    2. Dell Latitude 830/630
    3. Sony BX
    4. Sony FZ
    5. HP consumer notebooks
    6. Gateway consumer notebooks

Above post made me avoid Toshiba further as I know other people that actually became victims of above discussion.

When it comes down to it, there aren't that many choices out there. But I am buying for quality and I trust Apple, ThinkPad, Alienware or Panasonic. I have owned a Dell, HP, Acer and Sony and they just feel way too cheap no matter the price range.....except Sony makes it at least pleasant to look at while being cheap feeling at high price.

I'm using a Sony now, and it was less than I expected. The newer series are better, but then so are ThinkPads. I'd try to choose something over Sony the next time around.

I was thinking of a powerbook but when I went to the apple store I wasn't impressed especially by the keyboard. The space key on every one I looked at had quite a bit of play as did most of the keys.

Sony, expensive and the few I've seen from co-workers and friends haven't held up well. Although I had no problems with a Viao desktop I used for about four years.

Dell is used by all of our technicians and generally take abuse and hold up well. I don't know anyone with a HP. I would have ordered a Dell weeks ago but now, whatever I do I won't have a laptop before the end of June so I'm going to hang in there with the T61 for now at least. I'd like to see Dell release the m1330 next week and, if the specs hold up to the rumors, I'll order one and cancel the T61.

    Regards-Michael G.

Dell and HP make good business laptops. I recommend you take a couple seconds to look at them.

so the santa rosa is the chipset right/???

    is it that much better?

my main concerns are battery life and ability to play semi recent games on occasion.. doesnt need to be great gaming just playable (like not 10 FPS)

If you need even a moderate gaming machine, don't look at the thinkpads. Unless you want to hold out for the T61p. You might try a dell with a midrange graphics card.

I think he might be just fine with "semi-recent" games.

You know, I'm starting to think the T61 isn't that marvelous compared to the T60....I may second the OP and cancel to go with something that ships this month.

It's hard to judge what you're looking for, but the D830 and HP 8510 are very similar to the T61 series, with especially the HP 8510w almost identical to the T61P in terms of specs (difference of only the expresscard slot, hdmi port and blu-ray).
