i got my T61 about a year ago. recently the right side of the laptop where i rest my wrist is really hot. the computer gets hot it's on and not doing anything. my laptop used to be really cool and would never get this hot unless i did something really CPU intense. could it be because of the hard drive? i have 17.4 gb free of 105 gb.

Might want to clean out the vents and/or fans to ensure there's no blockage. The hard drive is a possibility I suppose.

Ambient temp also affects the internal temperature of the machine.

You might want to download and set up the TPFanControl program. I set mine to basically keep the laptop 10'C cooler then it chooses to do itself. The machines goes from being warm-hot to the touch to completely cool during all activities.

All you have to do is install it, close it. Open the .ini and set your temps, and then start it up again and choose smart mode. Success.

Did you mean left side or right side? Unless something drastically changed from T60 to T61, right side where you rest your wrist should have hard drive. Any issues with that?

If you are in the northern hemisphere, it is summertime. Time to turn on the air-conditioner!

The right side of the palm rest has a hard drive underneath it. Check what processes have a lot of disk I/O under Windows Resource Manager.
