    is it normal when I do not have anything open on desktop that the battery status indicator below is all whited out.. but when i open a window, it turns green and i can see the charging status

    This really isn't a Vista question because all of this is lenovo power management software.

    I don't know what's normal but I notice my T51p does that.

    Did you disable transparency in Vista? I read in a couple places (don't have links, sorry) in this forum that this is a Lenovo Power Manager problem. The only way to get it back is apparently to use a black wallpaper, or to enable transparency.
