If you need it for fall, buy it in time for fall. If you always wait for what's just around the corner, you'll never buy --and there's always something new just around the corner. Also, sometimes what's been out for a bit is more tried and true --there's less chance of gotchas from being an early adopter (e.g., new ThinkPad T4/5 series have additional support to reduce keyboard flex compared to the first-release models).

January is six months from now. The only waiting I would do is so that you can get the best discount on what's existing, and honestly, with things like the CPP program and additional 5% discount coupon, things are a pretty decent deal now. You could also think about waiting for the 26th to see if Lenovo announces Windows 7 upgrade programs, but there's no guarantee.

As LoneWorlf15 said, buy what you need when you need it. Use the time between now and the fall to watch for deals and coupons.

One caveat -- don't wait until the last minute to order since sometimes a particular configuration might take longer to build/ship. You don't want to be in a position where your laptop shows up at your home two weeks after you go off to school.

considering that resell value is good on thinkpads, you can always pick one up now for $700 new now and then sell it for 500-600 whenever new line comes out. The laptops with 3 year warranty hold their value even better.

I don't know that'll be the case going forward in my own personal opinion.

I agree. The T61 I bought 16 months ago for $900? $400-450 now if I play my cards right. No more than that tops.

That being said if you can get a good deal on a current model and it satisfies your requirements just go ahead and get it.

There is usually no need to get newest for the sake of unless there are specific features that you really want/need.

Also remember that when the new units hit, the pricing is not going to be dropped for a couple months. Also supply constraints are normal for the first couple months of launch.
