I've recently found the lenovo SL300 and SL400 in my local stores, and i HATE those piano-glossy lids!! also their prices aren't too high, but reasonable. so my question is, are the SL series as reliable as the T and R series?

i would get a R series or a T series, since they have the internal magnesium rollcage. I would either get the R400 or the T400, if you are looking for value for money, R400 is the way to go.

thinkpad knows best Notebook Deity
Yes the SL series to me is not a true ThinkPad, especially the glossy lid accompanied by the glossy screen. All other series but this one has the roll cage, apart from Lenovo designed laptops. The SL series is to me in no way related to the ThinkPad hallmark of durability. What do you do on your laptop? Is it heavy workloads? If not then you may want to look into any double digit ThinkPad, a T60 or T61 would be good, even a Z61p will be very good as a multimedia computer.

To me, the SL is a waste. An R series is basically the same price, and the T series is only $100, and well worth it.

R series will be dropped from the future Lenovo product offering the SL series will take place of the old R series.
-
The SL has its place, but it's not a ThinkPad in the traditional sense, which cheapens the brand in my opinion.
-
The SL series is a ThinkPad in name only. Get the R or the T series.

People always bash the SL-series for being called a "Thinkpad" but, in all honesty, they are completely fine for normal use as long as you're not overly rough with them.

Sure, nobody is saying that they are not useful in some niches. However, we just want to point out that if you are looking for a Thinkpad because you hold some meaning to the brand that the SL doesn't quite represent it.
