Upgrading to Windows 8 is fairly straightforward on the T420, I've done it on my spare drive to test out the final product. As for experience it depends on where you stand, I tend to be slow on learning new things and Windows 8 did a good job on making me cry in frustration! But there are others who enjoy using Windows 8 on their notebooks so the only way to real way to find out is to try it out yourself and see.

so just use win7 drivers and everything will work? was waiting for your install guide, hearts!
-
The last time I installed Windows 8 it recognised most drivers except for:
* Base System Device - Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller - Used the Windows 7 driver.
* Unknown Device - ThinkPad PM Device - Used the Windows 7 driver.
It's also worth noting that some Lenovo apps such as the Power Manager don't work properly as it should in Windows 8, while you can install the application it becomes lost under the new OS. You may want to hold off until Lenovo releases a newer, optimised version for Windows 8.
As for the guide... Hearst got a bit lazy.Even so the new forum update makes it harder for me to make guides as the table structure usually just tears up my hard work.

I've upgraded my T420 to W8.
1. uninstall the touchpad driver/software.
2. Uninstall Camera software/drivers. (you will need to reinstall if you leave it on there, Camera won't work until you install or reinstall).
Update all your drivers to the latest Windows 7 available on Lenovo.com
Install windows 8, an reupdate any drivers available for Windows 8 on Lenovo.com -
what if I don't want to upgrade right away but want to download the iso, what should I do? In upgrade assistant, I'm at "to keep personal files" or "nothing" for the next step.
-
Apparantly in the Upgrade Assistant you can proceed the steps and download the ISO. Eventually you will reach a screen where you can either install Windows 8 immediately, create a shortcut on the desktop to install it at a later time or create a bootable DVD/USB media which is the most recommended option.
-
-
Well assuming you want to create a Bootable Windows 8 Media whatever option you choose in that particular screen won't have any significance, the next screen will lead you to purchase the Windows 8 OS and once you have ordered the OS it will proceed to download the Windows 8 ISO to your computer.
It will then ask whether you want to install Windows 8 immediately, create a shortcut on the desktop to install later or to create a Bootable Windows 8 DVD/USB media. Choose to create the Bootable Windows 8 Media and once completed you can either perform an Upgrade or a Clean Installation whenever you're ready. -
alright, thanks!

nevermind...
-
In device manager, I have "Base System Device" without driver, what is that? I ran thinkpad software update, but nothing.
-
What about fresh Installation??
