hi guys,
i have finally decided to replace my current laptop and after great search i have found that T61 is most appreciated one with lots of fans around.it offers best build quality and performance but i have read almost everywhere that its lcd is not glossy one and it is off centered.i am NOT a geek so this thing is irritating otherwise this laptop is well rated.throw some light and tell me quality of T61`s lcd...also tell me whether my decision of buying T61 is good or not???my major focus is on sturdy build(with at least spill resistant keyboard) ,decent looks, nice chassis, solid performance...less weight etc.vaio SZ is good too but expensive...please throw as many views as possible
cheers!!!

All newer T61's with the 1440 by 900 or 1680 by 1050 have great screen quality, though the matte screens are not as bright as those of Dell or Sony...otherwise, its perfect.

does lenovo has any plan on switching from matte to glossy display in near future???what abt off centered display thingy?
-
I am not sure about your last question, but I find my 15.4' 1680 by 1050 screen unevenly backlit at low brightness settings, so much so that I am in the process of getting Lenovo to replace it. At full brightness settings though, it is a very sharp looking screen.

Oh, and the off center display... i don't even notice it unless I look for it.
Cheers and good luck! -
I doubt lenovo is going to glossy on the thinkpad line as they are meant for business. As for the off-centre, you won't notice it, unless you actually focus on the bezel. Its a minor thing, that after the first day, you won't really care about it.

Yeah, I've heard somewhere that the reason for non-glossy screens by Lenovo is that the reflection from normal office ceiling lighting really hampers usability. -
I was originally attracted to Lenovo specifically for the matte screen and as it turns out it had everything else I wanted in a new laptop. The screen is 14.1" 1440 x 900 and is very bright and clear. I do not think it is the best screen out there but it is totally usable. I hear the standard aspect ratio screens are not as bright. My only screen complaint is the vertical viewing angle is very poor. It makes for a lot of adjusting. There is ussally some debate as to differences between screen vendors, I don't know the details of that but mine is the lg.
As a whole, my only complaint is battery life. I have the six cell, (would have ordered the 7 cell but was not available), and it only lasts about 2.5 hours. The 9 cell looked way to big and heavy for me.
The t61 is a great computer and at current pricing is a terrific value. I love mine. -
One issue I have (in fact I got attacked by it just now) is that sometimes nothing will appear after waking from sleep mode. However, it can be fixed by doing Fn+F3 to go back to sleep then waking it up again.

The quality of the screen really depends on which panel you happen to get. There's a thread on Samsung vs. LG panels somewhere here on the Lenovo/IBM forums so you should check it out. Regarding the off-center screen, you honestly won't notice after a day or two of use. I prefer the matte screen since I hate to have my eyes switching focus all the time between my reflection and what I'm reading on the screen. Plus glare is terrible when you sit outside and there's sunlight.

As to the Samsung vs LG debate..in a nutshell:
LG:
Pro: Very good horizontal viewing angles. Bright enough (for a matte screen).
Con: Reds and Greens are somewhat muted and faded even after calibration and/or digital vibrance. Calibration and digital vibrance does improve matters but it still falls short in comparison to the Samsung.
Average vertical viewing angles (pretty much par with most other lcds ie. great vertical viewing angles are hard to find in most notebook lcds)
Samsung:
Pro: Bright. Better color saturation than LG panels especially greens and reds which aren't as washed out as on the LG.
Con: Mediocre viewing angles both horizontally and vertically.
So to sum up if you like more vibrant colors Samsung is better; if you value viewing angles, LG is prefered.
edit: this post is in reference to 15.4" wsxga+ lcds. -

It is not so much that the screen is "off center"... it is just that the bezel is wider on the left than it is on the right. If your head is in the center of the screen, the screen is centered
I don't notice anything odd about the screen at all while using it...
As for the matte vs glossy, the matte was a feature that particularly appealed to me - too often I have found the reflection on glossy screens to be extremely annoying, and can make them difficult to work with. -
I just received my T61 last week and while I like it a lot better than the Dell 1530 I returned, the worst part of the laptop is the display.
I have issues with viewable angle, it seems if I move to look closely at one corner of the screen, the other parts of the screen are harder to see. Its not all that good in office lighting either. I guess I am just not a fan of the amount of matte finish on the laptop.
Not sure which mfg of display I have, but it is unclear if the samsung v. LG people are only debating the wsxga+ or if it includes the wsxga displays as well.
If you want this laptop to be reliable and a workhorse, get the T61, and get used to a not so great screen. -
