Any recommendations? I haven't seen any specifically thinkpad branded ones so far (dvd-rw), but I suppose they dont need to be super durable?

They're more or less the same, really. Go with the cheapest you can find. I got an ASUS CD/DVD burner USB 2.0 drive a while back for $20 after rebate at Newegg.

I don't believe Lenovo makes a Thinkpad-branded external ODD, since they do make a wide array of docking stations that have a CD bay.

I wouldn't go cheapest, you do pay for what you get... but I've had a samsung trayless USB drive for about 3 years now that has done well by me.

I just use a $20 samsung one I picked up a year ago.

It still works fine, given I don't use it a ton.

Ya I use a slim Samsung external optical drive, but I bought it years ago for like 80 bucks. :(

Still works great after 2+ years

I use a slim and compact Samsung external USB 2.0 DVD drive (SE-S084D) that I bought earlier this year for about $33. Works just fine.

If you want some extra features, I bought this Liteon burner at a good price a few months ago.

Well *now* it is. I attribute this to the massive popularity of my post. ;) (Seriously though, it was available when I posted that...)
