is the trackpoint durable?
will it get broken from heavy daily usage? for say.... 5-10 years?
just curious of people insight on how well designed this is. i heard that trackpad is fragile and the first part to fail vs the keyboard.
i know that my sister laptop trackpad got broken (macbook) after 3 years of heavy usage. speaking of which... how durable is lenovo trackpad?

Can't say for sure, as I've never had any part on a ThinkPad keyboard fail, but in the few years that any were in my possession, no, the TrackPoint never showed any sign of wear beyond needing the cap replaced.
On a side note, I never really cared if my machines could last 10 years. I find even 6-8 a bit unreasonable an expectation. If you can get that out of them, great, but I fully expect them to be held together with duct tape and bailing wire at that point, unless they never leave your desk and are never exposed to your children. -
I didn't know that trackpad is that fragile.
I'll outline some advantage of trackpoints:
I think a Trackpoint is more durable than a trackpad because their design is more archaic; a trackpad has more circuitry that makes it more prone to failure.
Trackpoint is also immune to physical wear because the tip can be replaced easily, while a trackpad will start to rub off from day one.
Trackpoints can be replaced with the keyboard so if in a few years if it fails, you can get a functional trackpoint with a fresh new keyboard.
So in conclusion if you prefer a trackpoint then I'd say go for it. I'd recommend the Lenovo laptops that have both. -
I used a ThinkPad T40 quite heavily for 5 years. The TrackPoint worked just as good on the day I sold it as the day I bought it. The only maintenance I did was change the TrackPoint caps when they turned black due to oil from my fingers. Therefore, I would say a TrackPoint will outlast your notebook in most cases, if it doesn't a simple keyboard replacement will replace the TrackPoint as well.

A palmrest replaces the trackpad and both aren't very expensive.

I have a 600E Thinkpad, over 10 years old. The trackpoint still works quite well. Not sure if the newer models will hold up as well. And yes, I still use the 600E.

Scrubjay, nice. 10 years? I wouldn't think that someone would keep a laptop that much and not be tempted by new models. Nice. I'm curious, what are you using the laptop for?
trackpoint and/or touchpad durability
