    Hi,

The trackpoint on my x60s will always leave a small dot on the screen.

There's no damage yet. Just want to know if you guys have the same problem.

Yeah, I have this on my T60. It is not really a "problem". It just leaves a little mark on the screen and cannot damage it. It comes off if you use a display cleaner.

Hah, I know this for sure because in the manual that came with the computer in the section talking about caring for the computer, specifically cleaning the display, it states that there may be a track point smudge on the screen due to pressing the lid of the computer(which is essentially unavoidable when you close it). No need to worry man. Trust me I am one of the first to freak out about these kinds of issues, but I am 100% that this is no biggie whatsoever. If it really was a deal, Lenovo would have done something about it.

do yourself a favor and buy a shaggymac screen protector. best $12 i've ever spent. if you aren't carefully you will damage your screen from the trackpoint and the keyboard over time. i have seen way to many laptop come through my department at work with damaged screens.

I don't know how people at your dept treat their computers. But if you RESPECT your laptop, no harm will come from this trivial matter.

This isn't true. The mark will rub off for the first few months, but eventually it'll wear down the coating and the finish of the plastic panel, and you'll have a permanent spot (along with any keyboard key marks). I don't use the trackpoint so I just take it off - the hole doesn't interfere with typing.

Another good idea I've seen is to get a small microfiber cloth to place between the screen and keyboard when you close the lid. It's not a bad idea to carry around just in case you need to wipe dust off the screen or if something spills.

A lot of it depends on what you consider "damage." I bet what Lenovo means is "It won't break your screen." But it *will* over time permanently mar it. The fact that they mention it is just to reduce the number of people calling in and taking up tech support time inquiring. But it can happen on any laptop, and nobody is really interested in "doing something about it" because it goes against the constant push to make things thinner and lighter.

The most important thing is to not put anything on top of your laptop when the screen is closed. It sounds easy, but if you carry it around in a backpack, that usually means putting your backpack down face-first when you set it down, so the padded laptop compartment by your back is facing up and isn't bearing the weight of all your books.

And a whole lotta other anal stuff like that :) I see a lot people walk into class and open their screens, and there's a perfect mirror image of the keyboard and even palmrests imprinted into the screen. The funny thing is sometimes they'll scratch at the screen with a fingernail as if it's some top layer that will come off. Still makes me cringe when I see that!

I find it interesting that they say not to put anything on top of it... Yet their marketing has someone driving a dirt bike over a closed Thinkpad to show how tough it is.

But I guess its hard to keep that little head from making any contact with the screen but they really should look into it.

So far I haven't noticed any contact with my T61 but if I did start happening I would probably take it off and only put on it on when I want to use it.

Stunner - I have been a Sys Admin for the past 8 years and I have seen hundreds of laptops come and go through my department all sorts of Thinkpads, Latitudes and HP's. Very few people treat laptops with respect when they don't pay for them. I have a T41 that I use for work and it has the trackpoint mark and keyboard marks on the LCD. My personal T60 has none of those marks and I have the screen protector. I treat my work T41 and my personal T60 with the same respect and the T41 still has some marks. So to me $14 or so is quite reasonable to protect your investment.
