im not sure which one to download: desktop or netbook?

using a t400 and trying to get tri-boot (vista, xp, and ubuntu), so far 2 out of 3.
any advice, tips, warnings, experience?

You don't want the "netbook" version. That is a stripped down distro designed for computers with far less power than your T400.
You should get the desktop version (either 32-bit or 64-bit). I tend to prefer the "alternate" CDs as they provide far more control over the installation process. However, if you are unsure if you want to use Linux, and/or have less experience installing operating systems, you should probably use the "Live-CD" to test it out and install from there. -
I would install xp first, vista 2nd, and then ubuntu, letting ubuntu find the other two, and give you the OS choice each startup. Allocating 15GB for Ubuntu, if you are not storing data files within the linux partitions (OS and swap), is plenty.
Have a separate partition to place all data files (NTFS is probably best), and use that common data partition when using all three OS's for reading and writing data.
Ubuntu needs gpu-switching to be disabled and one of the alternate gpu's specifically chosen in the bios setup. The integrated Intel 4500HD is the easiest option, but you could try the ATI also.
