    Hi
I just ordered and recieved my first ThinkPad, a T61. I am extremely happy with it. I also got the ultra bay hard drive adapater and put in a western digital usb 2.5 drive that I picked up at best buy.

Problem is I did some benchmarking with hd tune and the hard drive is only reading at about 15 mb/sec. The internal c drive comes in at 47 mb/sec and the same drive hooked up to usb does about 25 mb/sec.

My question is why the miserable performance with the ultra bay adapter? Do I need to install a driver or something? I did a clean xp pro install when I got it.

I'm also wondering the same thing. I don't know why device manager or intel matrix console shows ultrabay hdd working in S-ATA.

After several days of weird problems with my ultrabay adapter and hard drive. Like couldn't hot swap hard drives, a few minutes after booting up some of the function keys would stop responding (like easy eject, wireless radio control, power management).

After much troubleshooting, reinstalling clean and preload made no difference. I came across the thread about the adapter being incomplete and the potential need for a caddy to secure the hard drive. I didn't have a caddy, but put this protective foil that originally was on the bottom of the wd 320 gb hard drive to protect the circuits on the bottom and installed into bottom of ultrabay.
Ever since everything work perfect, hot swap, function keys.

I think something was shorting out, and the foil on the hard drive prevents that. So I assume hard drive caddy would serve same purpose and also make the drive more secure in the adapter. I have since ordered a caddy off ebay.

The stock hdd in the T61p is wrapped in a non conductive cage ("caddy"?"). It does sound like a grounding problem.

I've got the HDD Ultrabay but haven't used it yet. Is there a place to purchase just the caddy?
