I know that this has 2 m2 slots and an hdd slot. Ill be buying one with a 16gb + 500gb hdd.

What would be better, add a bigger msata for windows + apps or replace the hdd with ssd?

Just depends on what you want to do with the machine... if you're only going to install Windows and not too many programs, something like a 128GB mSATA + the 500GB spinner might make sense. If you need more flash storage, a big 2.5" SSD will be cheaper than it's mSATA counterpart. Replacing the HDD would probably also marginally increase battery life.

I've been using this 128gb ssd for 3 years now and been fine, maybe because I always had an extra 500gb hdd for storage. However, I've read there's significant different between performance of msata vs ssd.

Your problem there is that M2 does not equal mSATA. *40 series have the former, not the latter.

Choices are exceptionally limited to begin with, and 128GB My Digital SSD is the largest one currently available.

hmm.. i might be better off with my current 128gb ssd, or possibly get a 240gb one.

it takes the regular, 9mm ssd?
