any 2.5" hard drive will do. in terms of reliability and noise, there are a lot of things that can go into it. if you want no noise whatsoever, look into and SSD. this will be a more expensive option, and you won't have as much storage space. if you want high performance, but still want to have storage space, consider a 7200rpm drive.

as for reliability, most drives are fine...once again, it comes down to what you're looking for.

as for how to change the HD: look at the r61 hardware maintenance manual here

If you're looking for speed the Momentus XT is probably the way to go. You might want to post over in the hardware forum where they spend more debating the finer points of hard drives.

One post does not make a trend. As the other thread stated, any 2.5" SATA drive should work.

Changing the HDD is very easy on the R61. Make sure everything is turned off, remove the battery pack then turn the ThinkPad over. You need to remove the hard drive cover which is located next to the Ultrabay DVD-ROM drive.

Unscrew the one screw at the bottom left and then slightly tug it away. There will be a ribbon in which you pull to take the whole HDD caddy out. After that its just a matter of taking the 4 screws out of the hard drive and swapping the old with the new then just reverse the steps. It shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to complete the whole process.

    please, one more question

which HDD (not SSD) is less noisy? i mean i'm very sensible to HDD noise as mine i can barely hear it in a quiet night.

Upgraded my gf's R61i with an Hitachi 7200rpm. It's not too noisy to her.

Btw, thinkpad is kind of picky on the type of hard drive on previous models.
Might give you "error message 2010". Not sure about the current ones tho.

The 2010 error was only prevalent on the t43 and r52 machines.
