I was wondering if it was actually possible to upgrade the hard drive of a thinkpad(in this case a yet to buy r60). I know it can be done in any regular laptop, but i was wondering because the thinkpad has the active protection system en shock prove mounting(or something like that), and of course the rescue and recovery.
So is it possible without buying a ridicolous expensive hard drive from lenovo itself(here a 100 gb 7200 rpm drive costs around 400 euro)

I'm thinking of the same with the T60 I'm getting this week. It only comes with 40GB HDD.
    I'm getting an additional 80GB SATA 150.
Harddisk is a CRU or customer replaceable unit. From infos available in Lenovo's website, it is easier to upgrade the HDD than the memory. What I'm planning to do is:

Burn the Rescue and Recovery on CDs.
Replace the harddisk with the bigger capacity.
Use the Rescue and Recovery discs on the new harddisk.

The shock-proof mounting are just rubber rails holding the HDD in place. The Active Protection System is part of ThinkVantage so it will be restored once you use the Rescue and Recovery discs.

Instructions on how to replace harddisk is available in Lenovo's website.

yes you can upgrade the hard drive but you might need to upgrade the firmware first otherwise it'll beep everytime you switch it on with the new HD. we do not have the R60 yet, still with the R52 and this is what happens.

This is an issue withe the SATA/PATA bridge used in T43s and R52s, and not likely to occur with the T60.

thanks for the clarification. our company has loads of R40's and now R52's!
i've just noticed that ibm has stopped r52s and are not R60's
R40's are all crap and after a year, most of our laptops' ethernet ports have stopped working! ibm's charging £800 for a fix! crazy!
