I've only installed a few programs and even turned off system restore and I still only have 20 something gigs left on my 100GB hard drive.
1. Is this normal?
2. If it is, what's the easiest way to upgrade? Norton ghost? Does it need a special kind of drive?

I have a suspicion that most of your hard drive space is being taken up by Rescue and Recovery's automatic backups. Open up Rescue and Recovery and take a look..

normally only taking about 6 GB

It seems to only have one backup, but it's taking up 27 GB. Too much eh? Should I keep the windows one on as well? What do people with an 80 gig hard drive do?

My desktop has a 100 gb partition for Vista and tons of installed software and I have 70 gigabytes free. I normally run with restore points and the recycle bin turned off.

it's the Rescue and Recovery software. Get rid of it.
