I was wondering if its possible to use a 9 cell battery instead of a 6 cell battery in a Thinkpad. Anyone has experiences with these batteries, how long will it be able to work with it?
    thanks in advance

Depends on your model...? That question was very general..

Although, in general terms, we speak of "6-cell battery" and "9-cell battery," each ThinkPad product series has its own battery designs that differ in terms of mechanical and performance characteristics. Plus, there are the "ultrabay" battery and the so-called "battery slice" that can be used in addition to the main battery.

Take the ThinkPad X201. It accepts one of 3 batteries (that are designed specifically for it): a 4-cell, a 6-cell or a 9-cell. The 6-cell typically provides 5 hours and the 9-cell 8 hours. YMMV.

The best way to find out specific details of accessories that are applicable to your own ThinkPad, check the Lenovo tabook.

almost all Thinkpads have an extended battery available that sticks out the back. In fact that's one thing that's pretty distinctive on Thinkpads, that they usually have this option (whereas in the past competitors didn't have that option most of the time but nowadays the situation is different).

The 9 cell in my t400 was one of if not the best option I picked on my thinkpad. Im at over 2 years and still at 85% capacity on it and still get 8+ hours of battery life. As for the sticking out the back I think that is more of a feature then a negative aspect as it allows me to grip the thinkpad when moving it from desk to desk.

Whos the cell manufacturer in your laptop, liquidxit2?
If its not Panasonic, then how have you treated your battery?

Its made by sanyo and currently at 85.1% capacity. The way I treat my battery is I use it. All day at work I am, most of the time, plugged in. When I go to class or home or anywhere else I am on battery 95% of the time. So my battery discharges pretty much everyday to at least 20-50%. When I was a windows user I kept it in the 5%-96% range, but now I just use the laptop and if it gets fully discharged oh well.

Makes me love the thinkpad more and more that its still so useful and mobile.

Exactly what I think too, lol.

But the new Thinkpads have such good battery life that the 9 cell is no longer necessary for great battery life (the 6 cell T420 ( 8 hours) getting nearly what the 9 cell T410 (9 hours) got). So saving on the weight and size are pretty big incentives.

Well the 9cell options on the ultra portable laptops is a bit different.

The x201 and t410 get a larger battery that stick out of the back.
The x301 (RIP) and t410s have 6 cell primary and 3 cell ultra bay batteries.

So it all depends. I love having as much battery as possible. But to each their own.

Even with a new t420 I would get the larger batter. You can never have too much juice.

Yeah Im liking the new figures on battery life. But still no matter what I would always pick the highest capacity battery combo I could get. getting over 20 hours would be amazing!

Same here. No matter what model laptop I get I will always seek the maximum battery life unless I was getting a high powered 17in (16:10) like an alienware or m6500. I remember when I got my m17x r2 that even with a full charge I got a warning at startup that I should plug in! Was funny at first.
