well as long as you assume the responsibility of knowing how well your thermal regulation is for that notebook nothing bad should happen. I leave mine on pretty much 24/7 since my entire family uses it in the living room. It is parked on a cooler with auto shutdown and hibernate enabled. i have the cpu undervolted and the gpu slightly downclocked to 75% core and 90% mem.
I use Notebook Hardware control program to enable auto shutdown if temps exceed 68C. I religiously clean all vents every 1st of the month with a can of compressed air and the laptop has been faithful for 3 yrs. had to replace the mouse 3 times (touchpad is worthless) its a 17 incher so cooling is ALOT easier to maintain. Which goes without saying my 4yo uses it for his edugames so it gets abused alot. Also build quality is important. I use an Asus. pretty solid and holds up real well. my next one will be an asus

I think he's asking whether there's a problem with keeping your laptop on for 20 hours every day.

While laptops are not designed for 24/7 operation, I have several older models in use at home in such fashion.

Well I don't like to leave any machine on unless I am using it. If you have no choice then you will have to leave it on, but if you are not using it shut it down.

There is nothing "wrong" with using a computer 24/7 assuming there is good cooling. Now parts eventually die over time sure...but that doesn't realistically factor in TOOOO much for your normal use. You just use more power obviously vs having it off.

While mine are just sitting, I usually set them up on the front edges of the bottom and top covers - they sort of look like a "tent". That way, there's air flow along all sides and no heat buildup.

Could you please tell me about some temperature thresholds for CPUs and GPUs to work safely in all-day computing fashions?

My Penryn CPU and ATI VGA often have their temperatures of ~47*C and ~50*C respectively under my normal works. Is it possible to let them run 24/7 with those temperatures or I should buy a cooling system for them?
