I haven't used any lately but in the past I have. This is for the K1000 and k1100. Development work, I just don't need the clocks that high as it just displays 2d static pages and I like to keep my seems cool. I'd just like to know what works well, is stable and has a small footprint (win7 x64). Thanks What works best for the w520 or w530?

The W520 and W530 both use Optimus graphics switching, so if you don't need the graphics power of the Nvidia card, you can shut it off entirely and just use the Intel graphics provided on the CPU. No need to downclock the Nvidia card unless you're in the corner case where you need more graphics power than Intel, but less than the K1000 for a certain program.

Like djembe said above. This is all taken care off for you by Optimus technology which will only switch to the faster Nvidia GPU when the extra power is needed. Even when it does I believe the GPU clock speed is variable, so in other words, you don't need to worry about it.

actually I have vga and display port monitors attached. I don't think intel can run the laptop display and 2 additional monitors.

Ah, okay. Yes, the Nvidia card will definitely be active in that case. As Flickster mentioned, Kepler graphics automatically adjust frequencies. You should not have any heating problems.
