I am looking to purchase my first Thinkpad for my non-profit business. I have a max budget of $2,500 and will be doing everything from ppt's to DVD via projector as well as the usual desktop publishing, office, excel, access, .... . The usual plus the unforseen in the future.

My Insperion overheated and shut off mid ppt recently (lack of umph I guess)and so I want the most performance and reliability for the buck... with US support!

    Question is:

Is the T43 worthy of purchase yet or are we waiting for the X600 Video card.

This needs to last me 4+ years so it should be the best bang for the long-term usability cause I don't get to buy something like this often.

I assume the T43 is the Tpad to have.

I'm not sure about the X600 video card, I'm actually meeting with some folks from IBM next week and will ask them specifically about this. The T43 is "the" ThinkPad to have if you have the dough yes, well, unless you want an ultraportable and then the X series makes sense. The T43 will certainly last you 4-years if you take pretty good care of it (it is well built, so not hard to do) and you get a 1.6GHz+ processor.

IBM might be announcing a new ThinkPad in the next few weeks, so stay tuned and see what that is.

Thanks. At $2,500, I will have to look hard for sources for a discount to get inot a good T43. One of my Board members is working on his PHD at Notre Dame, etc. IBM does not give discounts to non-profits as far as I know. I also know an IBM employee that lives locally that might be able to help out.

Seems the Fire GL might be a good video option as well which is out in April.

zeec, he was referring to the X41.

Yes, teh T43 will come with a 128MB X600, but no idea on the timing.

It was the X41 that we saw. But there is something else coming, but it won't be a replacement for or even close to the form factor of the T43, so by all means go forward with a purchase of a T43 and don't be waiting for something that would compete with it.

Is there any chance of a T43 or newer T series becoming availble soon that will support a 64 bit OS?

thats not going to happen because the Pentium M isnt a 64 bit processor so there would really be no benefit, probably wouldnt even work
