I followed Skint80's instructions to downgrade my T61 from vista to xp:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=136351

Worked great for the most part but I have one remaining "Unknown Device" in my device manager view:

    Intel(R) ICH8M-E LPC Interface Controller - 2811

tzachk apparently had the same problem and thinkpad updater fixed it:

Installing and running Thinkpad Update shows the following critical update:

    Critical updates
Intel Chipset Support 6 for WIndows 2000/xp/vista
    Manuf. Intel
    Version: 8.2.0.1012
    Size: 1.34mb

I install the update but it still shows it needing to be installed when I run Thinkpad Update again.

Any help in resolving this greatly appreciated.

Installed the TPM driver and it is no longer an unknown device. However now I have two Atmel TPM Devices in device manager and one of them has a question mark next to it. Don't know how to resolve it

    Edit:
Solved second issue by installing the client security SOFTWARE

The chipset drivers linked to in Skint80's instructions may not be correct for all T61s.

I was able to clean install XP on a previously (factory) installed vista machine by:

    - installing XP as he describes

    - install WiFi drivers (for net connectivity)

    - installing windows updates

    - installing .NET framework 2.0

    - installing IBMs System Update utility (requires .NET framework, hence the installation above)

    - let IBMs System Update identify what needs to be installed on your machine and automatically do it all for you

I then had to go back to Skint80's post and do the following:

    - install the UAA High Def Audio Driver

    - install the Audio and Modem drivers from the " get them here" location

    - install the Storage Matrix Driver to re-enable AHCI

I have only one question mark on my devices list - "PCI Memory Controller" which I believe is the Vista Turbo Memory

    rjmobile,
If I understand correctly, the LPC interface controller was resolved by the Intel driver.

    tzachk,

I decided to scrap the install and start over from scratch, so I never had confirmation that a particular driver package resolved the issue.

following the re-install method I outlined here, however, resulted in the LPC - 2811 device being properly identified and referencing the correct driver (it now appears under "System Devices").

    thanks, hope this helps.

    Hi

I followed the installation sequence here, but the unknown device is still there. What did I miss? Do I have to re-install the intel chipset? What'll happen if I leave the issue alone? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I already ran IBM System Update several times. There were no more critical or recommended downloads. Is it ok to download from lenovo website and manually install the chipset again? If so, is there any conflict or damage? Or is there some other way around?

    Thanks a lot.

I had the same unknown device but the solution is not at all obvious. The location of the device is Intel(R) ICH8M-E LPC Interface Controller - 2811 which is misleading but the problem is that you haven't installed the Atmel TPM driver which you can get here:

I had this problem and it turns out I needed to install the Thinkpad Client Security Solution 8.0 and this eliminated this unknown device.

For the Unknown device (besides the PCI device), you may want to try (I think it was mentioned before the Amtel PM)
