im waiting on my T400 order thats coming in a couple of days. I put vista on it simply because it was the cheapest os. Downgrading to XP i think costs an extra 50. not sure u can correct me on that.

But those who has T400 vista, is it worth keeping it or is it better to downgrade to XP or upgrade to Win7?

and if it is worth switching.. why?

I assume the version of Vista you got is Home Basic.

This is a fine OS and generally has very few problems on newer hardware. However, the "Home Basic" version is rather spartan and lacks many features such as media center, remote desktop, and aero glass.

    Other Options:

Windows 7 - Pluses - Faster and lower resource usage than Vista, great UI, includes support for running an XP Pro VM within Windows 7 for old software, good driver support generally a solid choice. Downsides - it is Beta, you will need to re-install your OS next March, some software/hardware refuses to run on 7.

XP - Pluses - tried and true standard, low resource footprint, generally compatible with everything. Downsides - dated UI, limited power management, in-ability to switch from dedicated to integrated graphics on the fly, it's TIME TO MOVE ON.

In either event, the first thing you should do is BURN RECOVERY MEDIA (double click on Q: and follow the wizard) so that you can revert to Vista if either XP/7 doesn't work out.

I would not suggest that you downgrade to XP, or upgrade to Windows 7.

With XP, you will not have the ability to switch graphics chipsets on-the-fly, and you will also get ~1 hour less battery on a 9-cell than with Vista.

Winodws 7 is a great OS, but it is still in beta and could present some issues, and, like jonlumpkin said, you'll have to reformat next year.

Windows Vista is a nice, stable OS with much better memory management and a bunch of other improvements over XP.

Assuming you're not trying to run with 1GB of ram, Vista will be fine.

I would have to agree with the above posters in that you should stick with vista. If done right it can be a great smooth operating OS. Buit then again Home basic is pretty spartan and really only for basic computing imho.

It's pretty much fine for most users, it's just that it's rather ugly without Aero ;)
And also with certain configurations in Lenovo's strange pricing scheme, it could be cheaper to stick with Vista Business.

Yeah I have used non aero vista and its def no where near as pretty as aero. But it does run leaner and meaner, but vista business is by far my favorite edition of vista. I never used the media features of home premium and I require the tools that come with business for day to day. As for cheaper, I wish it was cheaper to get business with the t400 Im looking to get.
