Been a diehard w520 fan for some time now. My dad has passed down a w530 decked out with a 1tb msata, 2x 1tb drives, 32gb ram k2000m video card. He's retired from the managed services and consulting field so I now own almost all his old thinkpads. I actually own a couple of w520 but the soon to be wife says I need to limit my tech toys.

I need to make a decision soon. This will be my 2nd w530 (first one is the k1000m) and I'm kind of ok with the keyboard now but I simply don't use it because all my special software and special configuration settings, passwords etc are all on my w520.

From my use I actually don't see any difference performance wise from the w520/w530, I did notice it from the w510/w520.

Once I have everything setup precisely as I like it I'm hesitant to switch, even if it's the newer model.

I can't stand the chiclet keyboard, reduced keyboard rows, removed lights and other reduced functionality from the **30 generations and onwards. I would take the W520 over the W530 any day.

The platform jump was *far* more noticeable from *10 to *20 than from *20 to *30. In all fairness, for a workstation like a W-series machine, Ivy Bridge was not much of an upgrade. The smaller systems relying on integrated graphics moved a bit more with it.

The real question here is why you would want to switch in the first place? If something works 100% to your satisfaction - which appears to be the case with W520 - leave it alone and enjoy life which is too short to begin with...

    My $0.02 only...

ok thanks, was just wondering as I'm not much of a CAD guy but I want to learn more from that field. Are there guys in this field, is the k2000m significantly or only marginally faster than he 2000m. I'm not keen on switching but it's one part that can't be upgraded. Just wondering if I'm missing anything, though I'm actually one of the odd people that still likes esata on the w520 over usb 3.0.

I'm not a CAD guy by any stretch of imagination so someone else will have to address that particular aspect.

BTW, I have more use for eSATA than USB 3.0 as well...
