After I reboot my laptop, I hear some high frequency weird sound near the fan (near blue button) something like "bad signal" sound in radio.
It will disappear sometime but come again sometime. Those high frequency sound make me uncomfortable.
    Anyone have the same issue?
    Thanks

    Greetings:

I also have this buzzing, electrical interference type noise (it actually sounds similar to a noisy ballast in a fluorescent lighting fixture, but much quieter). It sounds like it emanates from the top left quadrant of the keyboard area (underneath the keyboard, of course).

    1) Shutting off the radio switch has no effect - sounds continues.

    2) Unplugging from wall A/C and running on battery has no effect - sound continues.

I called Lenovo support and they asked me to release any built-up static charge by a procedure whereby the battery is removed and a/c is disconnected. The power button is pressed and released ten times. Then, the power button is pressed and held for forty five seconds. This had no effect - sound continues.

I would like to eliminate this rather annoying sound. Otherwise, I love my machine which I've had since February 27th (2009). Any ideas? Thanks.

I think I got the same problem as you do.
The noise is coming from mainboard. I thought it came from a WiFi card, but I removed it and the buzzing still there.
The sound is from "blue button" area in my case. How about you?
    Sometime louder and sometime lower.

    howruhenry,

The buzzing, static type noise on my X200 is also coming from the general vicinity of the ThinkVantage blue button. And, like you, its amplitude rises and falls, but it's always present at some audible level.

Last night, I opened the Manage Wireless Settings applet by selecting the key combination Fn + F5. Then, when I clicked the Open Access Connections button in the lower part of that window I could distinctly hear a rise in the sound of the buzzing (this mentioned FWIW).

Also, I found it very interesting that when you removed your WiFi card, the sound persisted. I was going to try the same thing. So, you think the noise may be coming from the mainboard itself?

    My X200 7454 has:

    1) Integrated Bluetooth module
    2) ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III
    3) Integrated Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband Card (not activated yet)

Did you call technique support center?
I did, and I was told that the noise is from the fan.
And, I noticed that if my fan is running (noisy), and those buzzing are gone.
May be the fan is noisy, and it cover those annoying sound.
    How about you?

    I also have a X301, 128 SSD, and 4Gb.
Do you have a noisy fan in your X301?
When my laptop run for 10 mins, the fan keeps running and non-stop.
The noise from the fan is quite noisy for me.
    How about you?
I am using Window 7, and I did not install any thinkvantage software.
Is it the matter why the fan keep running even the laptop is not hot. (using battery saver mode)

Yes, I did call Lenovo technical support. They offered to send me a shipping container so I could return the unit to their depot for inspection. Interestingly, they informed that I would not have to include the hard drive (something I would not do) but just the "shell".

I was and still am hoping that perhaps I will be able to identify the offending noisy device and then disable it in Device Manager (assuming, of course, that I will not need it on a constant basis. I can re-enable it "as needed".)

Also, in my particular case, I'm certain the buzzing, static noise I'm hearing is in no way related to the functioning of the cooling fan. I hear the noise whether the fan is on or off.

Do you mean the noise is constantly buzzing in your case?
For me, I only can hear it in a short period and it will disappear, but it will come again sometimes but not many.

My T400 and my wife's T500, both of which we just recently purchased, make the same noise from the same location. The sound is somewhat intermittent. It is definitely NOT a normal sound to come from a laptop.

    This is what I guess

This should be a common problem for intel cpu,
I'm not sure how many laptops you owned before, if you have some other intel core duo or duo 2 laptops, you should compare them, they all had this noise.

Because everyone has different hearing behavior. someone might feel it's a painful , but the others are not.

if you had some other laptops, I'm sorry, I am wrong. but if this is your first laptop for intel core duo, I guess I'm right.

This is my first laptop with a Core Duo. It is rather annoying. The noise is fairly audible from a full meter away and with a TV on in the background.

    solution:
    1 try to use TPfancontrol.
2 go to bios, security , then pick i/o , disable each individual deceive to trouble shooting.

I don't recommend send it back to lenovo repair center. Last time I sent my x61s to check the blue screen problems, one of them change something, then it started the annoying noise.

I just plugged my T400 into A/C power, and I noticed that it stopped making the noise.

I explored this issue when I got my T60. It is related to voltage switching. Some people claim it is the processor, others DC-DC converters. I say it is related to power management because the T60 would only do it when the CPU was at idle. Now my X200 does this also (sounds like Morris code a bit), even with high CPU. In the end something is vibrating at about 10 KHz maybe higher. It is unfortunate, but there is nothing really that can be done about it. I looked at my motherboard to look for an inductor that may be transducing the sound, but found none on the top side (it could be a cap or internal to a chip even in principle), I wasn't going to take my motherboard out over the noise. It certainly can be very annoying particularly if you start obsessing on it. It is possible it varies machine to machine in intensity, depending on how well the offending parts are damped, but this isn't just a Lenovo issue. You can try disabling all power management if you want a hot short battery life laptop but other than that your only other option is to loose your high freq hearing.

That is probably the best way to describe the sound. It sounds like high-frequency Morse Code.

Do you mean nothing better if I send it to Lenovo technique support center?

I don't know what you are asking but this kind of thing seems endemic to modern designs to some extent.

    drwho,

I would like to try to disable all power management as you suggested, just to see the effect. Not to ask a stupid question but would you please walk me through the exact procedure to do this, so I get it right.

BTW, I just booted up my X200 and I can hear it buzzing away in the background. It was especially noisy during the boot process - now the noise has subsided a bit.

When I first started hearing this noise I thought my X200 was picking up electrical interference from our house 5.8 Ghz cordless phone system - it's that type of annoying sound. But no, it was not related to the wireless phone at all.

    ~D.

I might decribe a wrong sound of my issue.
I just downloaded Tpfancontrol and stop the fan, and I hear more clear about the high frenquent sound.
Actually, I hear two sounds electic flow and "bee bee bee"
The sound of electic flow is too low to hear in normal, but those high frenquent "bee bee bee......" is the sound what I am talking about and annoying me so much.

Those 2 sounds are from the same area, between bluebutton and power button.
    Any idea of that?

My noise seems to be coming from the top Right-hand corner - I'm highly discouraged that it may be permanent - oh well, what can we do?
