I don't know how big a chunk of their sales the academic market accounts for, but my cynical suspicion is that they are waiting for the majority of back-to-school purchases to get beyond the 30-day trial period so that they don't have tons of people trying to return them...

Yes, they recently changed their return policy, but that doesn't mean that people wouldn't try...

They no longer promise that you can return within 30 days. You "might" have to pay a 15 percent restocking fee, whatever that means. I'm keeping mine anyway.

reallyt when did they change, this. This is horrible. It means they aren't as confident in there systems anymore.

Not necessarily. We don't know how many people ordered just to take a look and then returned the computers. Assume that under the old system 15 people ordered a computer and 5 returned it. Under the new system, only 10 people order a computer but they all keep it. The number of notebooks sold is the same but Lenovo has lower cost because the returned notebooks probably had to be sold for less as refurbished systems.

Which raises the fact that Lenovo has a serious problem with getting its ThinkPad line into retail stores. I live in Atlanta, one of the largest cities in the country, and I was not able to see one in person before I bought. (I could have driven 45 minutes to the far side of town to one independent computer store, I was told.)

And this is the home of the ThinkPad national help center!
