so i've been very happy with ibm thinkpads for years...it's a great piece of hardware. however, the ibm (now lenovo) software on there is absurd. my computer (x40) just died and i sent it back to be fixed (thinkpad support is great), and they sent it back with a reimaged hard drive.
anyway, it took me all day just to update windows security fixes and thinkpad drivers and programs! i haven't even loaded my own programs on there yet.
i find the thinkpad software redundant and unnecessary given all the windows software that does the same thing. are sonys, fujitsus, portable ones, or panasonic configurations any better?
i mean, this is ridiculous. i use this computer to do only word processing offline, and yet i find i need to be online all the time downloading all the thinkpad updates that come out constantly.
any advice would be appreciated.

Turn off the updates.

many people like the Thinkpad software, since it is usually better written than the microsoft equivalents. but you can remove or not upgrade it if you don't use it.
what compares to the x series?
