looking at the uninstall list in the control panel, there is "Intel Management Engine Components"

start menu has "Intel Management and Security Status" and when i open up this program, there are tabs for

    1. Active Management Technology - this seems like some type of remote desktop assitance thing?
    2. Anti-Theft - some type of hardware thing?

anyone have any more information about this stuff?

i hate bloatware that comes on the laptop. is it ok to uninstall this?

Keep in mind that you likely have to be correctly configured to your corporate domain for this to function.

It's not like some random 15 year old will be able to connect to your laptop while its off in the den or whatever.

    Just saying...

    yeah i'm sure thats right

still pretty stupid imo to install a backdoor into the system by default. how about this: when i do connect to a corporate domain, thats when they put that bloatware on my system.

found an old thread in case anyone else is interested:

well i disabled it in the BIOS, then uninstalled from control panel. i now have about 6 less processes running at bootup so thats good. however, in device manager i now get an exclamation mark with "unknown device"

You can install the driver only but not the software, just extract the contents of the Intel MEI driver but don't run the setup. Just manually direct the missing driver to the extracted driver using the Device Manager and it should clear up the Unknown Device.

One of the thing that I find useful with MEI is you can use: http://{your machine ip}:16992/ and remote power on / off your machine.
