My W520 CPU temp used to be at around 47C at idle, but recently I found out the idle temp will very often go up to 55ish and then drop down to 45ish, looking like some programs are secretly using CPU, but the CPU usage is 0% on windows task manager.

Is this normal or something wrong?

what's your w520 cpu temp at idle?

    thanks

What processor are you using on this W520, also more importantly what is the ambient temperature.

If I remember correctly I got idle temperatures of 43c to 50c with a i7 quad [email protected] ghz on 3 different W520's. Ambient temp was 25c.
Load temperatures were reaching 90c max on one system, 88c on the other two.

GPU temperatures were around higher, at about 92c or 95c.

Forgot to mention this is utilizing TPfancontrol.

    Thanks for the reply.

    It's i5-2520M @2.50GH, 2.50GH. GPU is 1000M.

    Room temp is about 20C.

    I am also using TPfancontrol.

Use CPU-Z to find out if your CPU is running at full clock speed at all times, or if it's actually hitting idle states.

I don't have a W520, but I do have a T420 with the same processor that you have (i5-2520M) and mine idles between 38c-42c using the Power Sourced Optimized profile from Lenovo Power Manager. I'm generally not sensitive to fan noises so I don't use TPFancontrol, ambient room temperature is 20c. I thought the bigger chassis of the W520 would've cooled the CPU slightly better than my T420 though I am using Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste in my system.
