    Looking to get either one , but with the same specs the R series is cheaper than the T series. Any difference between the two???

    and so on with 3 different R models..r61i, r61e, r61??

    The T series is lighter & has more protective features, I believe.

    In a nutshell (R61):

    - about .2" thicker
    - uses a standard height (12.7mm) optical drive
    - lacks the option of an FX 570M found on T61ps (it still has an NVS 140M optionally)
    - only 14" models have the roll cage
    - lack of WWAN options

    Other differences affecting the R61 include the fact that the R61 has the option of a glossy screen and offers a Blu-ray drive, while the T61s don't.

    The 14.1" T and R61 models are virtually identical, in other words.

    The R61i is a cheaper version of the R61 offering slower processors and no option for discrete graphics. I think it doesn't have a docking port, but I'm not sure.

    The R61e is for the most budget-oriented. It features no touchpad and lacks the LCD roll cage (as do all other 15.4" R61 models). It also uses slightly different materials that generally aren't as good as the ones found on 14.1" R/T61s.

    14.1" R61 = 14.1" and 15.4" T61s in terms of protective features like the roll cage.

    Lol. That's exactly what you said to me I believe, chubby. Heh. I honestly don't understand why the T61 seems to be more popular... there really isn't too much of a difference between the R61 14.1" widescreen vs. the t61 14.1" widescreen. :/.

    The R61 is cheaper, I might as well get that.

    Hell yeah, I've copy and pasted that three times already, lol.

    T61 = flagship
    Flagship = "better"
    Better = drool
    Drool = buy
    Buy = T61

    Lol.

    Under same config:

    ThinkPad T61 15 Widescreen US$967
    ThinkPad R61 15 Widescreen US$814
    ThinkPad R61 14 Widescreen US$835

    The question is, do I pay US$150+ for a roll cage, is it really needed.

    If someone wants to know the difference between the two systems, they should use the search function. As you already pointed out, there a lot of threads on the topic, so members should have no problems finding information. :)

    Out of curiosity, is the R6x Ultrabay's optical drive interface connector an industry standard JAE50 connector or a proprietary connector like the T6x's Ultrabay Slim optical drive interface?

    If the optical drive connector isn't a standard JAE50 interface connector then one can't swap out the optical drive with just any optical drive, regardless of the physical 12.7mm height of said drive.

    If you look at the cooling vents you will see that the T61 uses a copper (golden) heat sink while the R61 uses a aluminum (silver) one. I would assume that the R61 also uses lower-end components in places where the eys cannot see, if only they are slightly cheaper ones.

    The point is, if you can already spend $900 on the R61 then why not investing another $100 to get the lighter and thinner T61?

    BTW the R61 can load a Blue-ray drive while the T61 cannot, that's about the only thing in R61's favour, apart from prices.
