i thought i read somewhere here about april 19 being the date for changing from x25m to the new third gen intel 320 ssd series.

does anyone know if this has already happened or when it might??
how do you check for this part on the lenovo site for the w520 and t420??

it only says intel ssd without the model number.

    thanks

No idea- it's news to me that they wouldn't have already certified and 'ascended' the Intel 320 series for the T/W/X series with 2.5" drives.

The only way to be certain is to buy a 320 yourself and install it, I think (it's cheaper too: if you're going to pay that much for an SSD you might as well get the Intel 510 instead (same capacity, twice the speed) or at least a bigger 320.

510 is not twice as fast. it has slower random speeds on benchmarks compared to the 320 which is more important as a primary drive.
if the price differential is about $100 with what you get from newegg it's worth paying that to get the ssd covered by the lenovo waranty if you opt for 3-4 year extention for a $2500+ w520 model. that's my thinking anyway. these machines last a long time as i'm typing on my 5 year old t60 and dealing with 3rd parties for components is not wroth the hassle.

ram markups are outlandish but hard drives can be argued both ways.

I tossed in an OCZ vertex 3. It has a three year warranty.

as i expected there's finally some changes in the hard drive options. it now says:

Intel 160 GB Solid State Drive, Serial ATA
Selecting this option may delay your shipment 1-2 weeks.

for both t420 and w520 and the price for the t420 model has been reduced to $320. (much more reasonable)

could this mean it's been updated to the intel 320 ssd series? i still don't know how one would find the exact model number on this component. does anyone have a clue?

I called a rep today when I was ordering my W520 and he said that the "Intel 160GB" SSD was an X25-M. He didn't say anything about the 320 series when I asked him.

i'm waiting on them to change to the new ssd before i order mine. at $320-360 range for the 160gb model for the new 320 series i'd much rather get it factory installed and have it covered under the lenovo waranty than to get it from newegg.
i wish they would hurry up already!
