that would probably drive the cost up a fair bit. I love the Thinkpad Transnote (it doesn't have a butterfly keyboard), they are such a great gadget, but slightly too ahead of its time.

While I like the butterfly keyboard for its innovative design, I wouldn't want a future ThinkPad with one, as it would probably be prone to failure. I prefer as much simplicity as possible while meeting the functional objective.

I would rather have something like the ThinkPad S30 which also had a bigger keyboard than the chassis: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6434675-post1.html

I'd say both the butterfly keyboard and a keyboard larger than the chasis are highly unlikely.

Both were the result of trying to get good keyboard ergonomics on machines with 10" or smaller screens in a 4x3 aspect ratio. The movement to larger screens, as well as 16x10 and 16x9 aspect ratios, makes both largely unnecessary.

Additionally, as lead_org said cost, complexity, and thickness would increase considerably with a butterfly keyboard. Although, I admit it would be a marvel to hold.

The less moving parts, the better. That thing looks like you can't get too rough with it or it will fall apart if you open the screen too fast or slam it too fast (not that you should be doing that anyway :))

has anyone here still have 701 or owned one before? They would be a very nice collector's item.
