Yeah if nothing else you should be able to get it through Lenovo... if I were you I'd just give them a call and see what they say. :)

I have the X200 as well and was looking into getting an SSD like yourself. Here's what I've learned thus far. The standard HDD in the X200 is supported by two rubber rails. Apparently some X200 users are saying that you can insert the SSD using the same rails, but it will be a tighter fit. Not sure the validity of this, sounds a bit strange.

I'm sure you can get the converter through Lenovo, but be prepared to be charged loads for it. Perhaps take a look on eBay or even NCIX.

    Read this thread.

Either FRU 42w7888 or 42w8019 will work. 42w8019 is newer, slightly cheaper, and slightly lighter. I have 42w8019 and it works very well. I ordered mine from IBM Maintenance parts for $30 + S/H.

If you buy a 2.5" SSD (most are) you will use the standard rubber rails. However, if you buy the 1.8" version (Lenovo only uses 1.8" SSDs) you need the storage converter mentioned above. 1.8" drives are physically smaller, require 3.3 volts (vs. 5), and use a Micro-SATA interface. FRU 42w7888 or 42w8019 take care of the size, voltage, and interface conversions.

yeah, like jonlumpkin said, the power is dfferednt
u cant simply put the 1.8" ssd, in
    the converter must be required

for samsung, the 2.5" ssd is much expensive than the 1.8" one
i search all webs, nothing find at ebay or ncix

there is a US IBM part web
    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/IBM-Lenovo,Laptop,Part,42W8019.aspx
u know wut, 42w8019 will cost 110 US includ tax and mailing
    the product only 30.........
well, originally, the 42w8019 cost only 3us, and the 42w7888 cost only 20us
as the micro econ said, demand goes up, curve shift to right, price goes up.~~~~~~~~`

anyway, gonna call lenovo first on monday, that's why this weekend seems so long for me

also, jonlumpkin , do u know if the 42w7888 fits for x200?

It's not simply that the power is different, the physical connector is different between SATA and uSATA as well, so you can't just plug it in.
The adapter I'm using in my X200 right now is 42w7888, so i think you'll be fine ;)

Will these adapters work in any lenovo (i.e. the t61) or is there another part #? Also I doubt this, but could the adapter from lenovo work in other non-lenovo laptops?

The adapter should work in any laptop (or even desktop) as long as the physical size of the hard drive bay is the same. Either adapter will work fine in a R/T/X 61(s/p/t) or x200(s/t), T400/T500, W500/w700. The x300/x301 does not require an adapter as it only uses 1.8" Micro-SATA drives.

Are the rubber rails supposed to be used with the 1.8" to 2.5" storage converter as well? Or you simply insert the storage converter with an SSD into the HDD bay? The Maintenance Manual is not quite clear about this... so I wanted to ask. Thanks.

Will this work putting a 1.8" drive into the optical-bay hard drive caddy? Or Should that be a different converter?

The rubber rails are NOT required, just insert the storage converter by itself. Pictured:

    Should, although I haven't tried.

There's the newmodeus.com and Lenovo 1.8-to-2.5" adapters. See here.

This is kind of dumb, but why would anyone want to use a 1.8" SSD in a X200 when it accepts 2.5" SSD. This would save the hassle of going out to purchase an additional accessory to make the SSD work with the X200.

When I bought my 1.8" Samsung SLC SSD it was less than half the price of the equivalent 2.5" model (I have no clue why, but I took advantage of the opportunity). Additionally, the 1.8" models are about 30 grams less than the 2.5" models and with a lightweight unit like the x200s every gram counts. Further, the 1.8" model may be very slightly more energy efficient due to the reduced voltage (although I'm not sure about this one).

One other reason is if you change notebooks more often than you plan to change SSDs. The new model you buy may only have a 1.8" bay and you are SOL if you bought the 2.5" version and want to use it.
