I've used the ThinkPad Premiere Leather Case and a Case Logic TNC-15 (not listed).

Case Logic TNC-15. Well thought out, roomy for a T400, lots of pockets and storage plus it is under $40 delivered from Amazon. Still should have plenty of room for a T500. A very good value but rather pedestrian in looks.

The TP Premiere case is nice too but not quite as roomy as the TNC-15 mostly due to the arrangement use to secure and protect the laptop. With the T500 this will probably be less of a factor since the laptop should pretty will fill out interior but the TNC-15 will still have an advantage. The T500 with a 9 cell battery might be a tight fit. There isn't a lot of extra room height wise with my T400 + 9 cell. Has lots of pockets too but not as many as the TNC-15. The black leather really looks sharp IMHO. I guess it all depends on what you want it for. The TP looks and feels great while the Case Logic is very functional and a better buy.

For messenger style bags, go with Timbuk2. A little expensive but worth every penny.

Dell exclusively sells a Belkin slim backpack. Here is a link. It includes an accessory pouch. Capacity is enough for the laptop plus one good-size textbook and a notebook, but not much else. It is well built and stylish, but does not hold too much.
